FINAL CONSULTATIONS SET FOR PRIVATE SECTOR WAGE GUIDE

RIDHIWANI Kikwete, the Labour, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disabilities state minister in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) made this affirmation over the weekend when inaugurating a business complex for the Trade Union Congress of Tanzania (TUCTA) in Arusha.

Comprehensive consultations have already been conducted with major stakeholders, including employers’ organisations, policy regulators and government departments, with a final meeting slated to set proposed wage levels before such amendments are signed, as early as next month.

"I want to assure workers that President Samia Suluhu Hassan highly values your welfare," he stated, underlining that the government is committed to improving labour laws to meet essential needs of the workforce.

In his remarks, the minister highlighted the government's commitment in collaborating with employers to implement strategies for job creation, protect workers' rights and enhance conflict resolution mechanisms through dialogue.

If approved, the new guidelines would be a significant step in the policy dialogue on how to ensure fair compensation and better working conditions for employees in the private sector.

Reviews of the matter in online entries say little on private sector minimum wages, illustrating that the notion is more applicable for the public sector.

One entry says that the International Labour Organization (ILO) plays a significant role in setting and promoting minimum wages globally, without directly setting minimum wages by providing guidance and standards for member states to establish their own systems.

“The core ILO instrument in this area is the Minimum Wage Fixing Convention, 1970 (No. 131), which emphasizes the need to cover all wage earners and considers both the needs of workers and their families, as well as economic factors,’ the entry indicates.

In establishing minimum wage systems covering all wage earners, the convention allows for certain exclusions, such as agricultural or domestic workers, but emphasizes keeping these exclusions to a minimum, it further asserts.

Minimum wages can be set through various methods, including statute, decisions by competent authorities or by giving legal effect to collective agreements, by taking into account the general wage level, cost of living, social security benefits and living standards of other social groups, it adds.
